Love is probably the best emotion to arouse creative spirits in people. Throughout history, art and love seem to have had a close connection with each other. Many literary works, paintings and music have been known to be created in the theme of love. Plato even went as far as to say “At the touch of love, everyone becomes a poet.” Indeed, too many a poets have been born out of love, some for successes at it while others for failures at it. As much as love has influenced artists, it has also been the theme of the art itself and just like other fields of art, movies are also quite fond of this theme. Such movies, whose plot revolves around romantic connections between its characters are called romantics movies.

February 14th, celebrated as Valentine’s Day all over the world is the emblematic “Festival of Love”. Lovers all over the world look forward to this day with great expectations. Whether their expectations are met or not, however is an entirely different matter. People, especially the lovebirds, celebrate this festival in great spirits. The singles need not feel indifferent towards the list though, as these movies are just about the perfect way, to sit inside their cozy house and feel satisfied with oneself, while couples go on the business outside.

10. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

The sole entry on our list with elements of science fiction, “Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind” is one of the finest movies seen in recent years. It is the story of a couple, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, who undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories after their relationship has turned sour. But amazingly, their erasing of each other from memory doesn’t prevent them restarting the whole affair they had begun first time around.

It is one of those movies which have enjoyed critical and commercial success alike. It has featured frequently on “All Time Great” lists over the years and has been an even more common entry in “Best Movies of the Decade”. The movie also won the 2004 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. It has IMDB rating of 8.4 currently.

9. When Harry Met Sally (1989)

When Harry Met Sally has become one of the most loved romantic comedies released over the past twenty-five years. Billy Crystal is Harry and Meg Ryan is Sally. The movie tells the story of these two individuals, who meet just before sharing a cross-country drive, through the period of twelve years after their first meeting. Set in New York City, this movie was so successful that it even coined the concepts such as “high-maintenance” girlfriend and the “transitional person”, which have become household concepts over the years.

The movie did good business on theatres at the time of its release. It has also garnered lots of plaudits to its name, through the recognized best movies’ lists and viewer polls. The AFI placed it at #25 on its “AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Passions” list on 2002 and later at #6 on “AFI’s 10 Top 10 Romantic Comedy” list on 2008. It holds ratings of 7.6 on IMDB currently.

8. Pretty Woman (1990)

Released a year after When Harry Met Sally, this romantic comedy was no less in terms of success. Richard Gere plays a successful businessman, who hires a beautiful Hollywood prostitute, played by Jullia Roberts, initially just as a companion for social functions he has to attend, but later on ends up falling in love with her. The title of the movie was inspired from a famous song “Oh, Pretty Woman” by Roy Orbinson, sometimes referred to as only “Pretty Woman”, which features on the movie as well.

The movie was a major box-office hit of 1990 and one of the highest moneymaker of that year. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie is the best romantic comedy of all time in US, in terms of estimated ticket sales. The critical reception of the movie, however was poor at the time of release. However, it has went on to receive mixed reviews over the years. It is rated at 6.9 on IMDB currently.
