7. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

A priest is on trial for the death of young woman named Emily Rose, upon whom he had performed an exorcism. The homicide case is taken by a lawyer, and the tribulations the woman suffered while possessed are shown through flashbacks.

The movie, directed by Scott Derrickson, was inspired by a 16-year old German girl named Anneliese Michel, who showed several symptoms of demonic possession in 1968. After suffering paralysis, starvation, demonic visions and self-abuse until 1975, two priests performed exorcisms on her before she died of starvation in July 1976.

6) The Conjuring (2013)

Released in 2013, “The Conjuring”, directed by James Wan, is about two paranormal investigators – Ed Warren and his wife, Lorraine, investigating a family that was supposedly haunted and terrorized by a dark mystic force when they moved into a Rhode Island farmhouse in the 1970s.

The movie is based on the same story that actually took place in a farmhouse in Rhode Island in the 1970s. It captures the rapping noises, the presence of witch and ghostly images that traumatized the family and transpired in that house.

5. A nightmare On Elm Street (1984)

“A Nightmare on Elm Street” is a 1984 film that follows the story of a spectral child murderer and boogieman named Freddy Krueger,  who in the dreams of his victims stalks the children of the members of the lynch mob that killed him.

Directed by Wes Craven, this movie remains till this date one of the most memorable horror films ever produced. In 2012, it was included in The New York Times’s list of “The Best 1000 Movies Ever Made”.

According to Craven, the movie is inspired by men from Southeast Asia, who were from immigrant families and died in the middle of nightmares. One of the victims was the son of a physician who’ve had several nightmares before he died for unexplained reasons.

4. Jaws (1975)

Directed by Steven Spielberg, “Jaws” is set around the fictional Northeastern fishing community of Amity Island. The plot follows a police chief, a grizzled fisherman and a marine scientist set out to stop a gigantic great white shark that began to terrorize the community by attacking swimmers and boaters for several days during the summer.

The movie’s screenwriter and novelist Peter Benchley was inspired to write the story by a series of shark attacks that actually plagued the New Jersey shore in 1916. Over a 12-day period in July of that year, the seven-foot-long great white shark attacked five people, four of whom died.

Jaws won 3 Oscars in 1975, and was a summer blockbuster. It currently has a IMDb rating of 8.1 with a rank of 203 in it’s “Top 250” list.
